Wild HorsesThe small horses on Shackleford Banks are often called banker ponies by the locals, and are believed to be descendants of Spanish Mustangs that were shipwrecked on the outer banks over 400 years ago. They can often be seen from the ferry boats near the east end of Shackleford. The Foundation for Shackleford Horses manages the horses in cooperation with the National Park Service.
